Design Roots

Whether its a logo, large chalk board or an invitation suite Heather of Design Roots has you covered. From her home base in Frisco, TX Heather produces some of the most lovely designs and provides awesome tips and tricks to meet your every need. Today we take you into her world as she shares what motivates, and inspires her work.

Heirloom: Do you have any morning rituals or things you do to get ready for a long day of creating and painting?

Heather: As a mommy and a business owner I like to wake up before the rest of the house so I can enjoy that first cup of coffee before my crazy day starts - I listen to a local radio show as I either get ready or work on jobs before the kiddos wake up. Throughout the day I have my iTunes radio going with everything from Dave Matthews Band to Maroon 5, whatever fits my mood that day!

Heirloom: Tell us about your journey that led you to creating Design Roots?

Heather: I’ve always had a love of all things hand lettered and hand drawn, so when I decided to major in Landscape Architecture it was the best of both worlds - I got to incorporate my absolute love of all things nature and green with my interest in hand lettering and drawing. After college and working in the field I took a calligraphy class with an amazing instructor here in Dallas and just knew that calligraphy was what I needed to be doing. Having the pen in my hand felt so natural to me, and all I wanted to do was practice. I took every class I could and eventually began to develop my own modern and whimsical styles. I started out doing envelope jobs and place cards, but very quickly branched out into invitation design, logo design and large chalkboard and mirror pieces.

Heirloom: What intrigues you most about paper & design?

Heather: I think what I love most about paper and design are all of the colors and textures available to use - I love to incorporate a textured paper as part of my design, and the same goes with color. There’s nothing like finding that perfect envelope color to pull everything together! I tend to pull a lot of my inspiration from nature, and I gravitate towards clean, simple and beautiful designs that incorporate hand drawn accents like floral clusters or laurels.

Heirloom: Tell us a little about your classes that you teach!

Heather: One of the best things about being a calligrapher and about starting my business is that I get to share my love and passion for the art of hand lettering with others through my calligraphy classes. I offer classes for beginner and intermediate students and try to structure the classes so that I am able to give personal attention to each and every student - every single student is different, so keeping the classes smaller is really important to me. One of my favorite things to teach is mixing ink and addressing envelopes because these classes are a little less structured and I just get to help my students play {and I get to play with them!} I also teach a fun hand lettering class at our local Paper Source store and am going to be adding some new classes this fall that work with watercolor and brush lettering.

Heirloom: You do so many creative things like wedding invites to logo designs, what’s your personal favorite thing to work on? And why?

Heather: I really love everything I get to do because each project and each client are completely different - I love having the opportunity as a designer to create completely custom projects, and a lot of times I end up learning something new in the process. That being said, seeing a whole wedding suite come together is especially fun for me, and with a wedding suite I get to work with every aspect of design and calligraphy from start to finish.
