Few things are as precious as two people deeply in love. Young or old our hearts warm as we gaze upon two people completely wrapped up in each other's company. The ear to ear smiles, the glowing eyes, and laughter warm even the stoniest of hearts. Paige from Awake Photography welcomes us into her world today as she shares how she begins each day, her adventurous start to photography and being a new mom / business owner.
Heirloom: Do you have any morning rituals you start your day with? If so, would you mind sharing a few of them with us including why you feel that help you get the day started off right?
Paige: I start every day with an iced coffee from Starbucks. I can't believe that I got into this habit, but I cannot function without my daily Starbucks. Other than that, I hustle to answer emails while my husband feeds our babe. Clearing my inbox each morning help me feel like the chaos is better managed.
Heirloom: Tell us about your journey into photography. What led you to taking up photography?
Paige: My husband and I quit our jobs and took an extended honeymoon right after we got married. We backpacked through Central America and Europe for about a year, and this is where my love for photography took hold of my life! I just fell in love with capturing everything around me. After returning home, I placed an ad on Craigslist for a photography mentor and I found Andy Hemingway who taught me everything. He was a MMA photographer at the time so I learned in an atmosphere MUCH different than the world of weddings.
Heirloom: What about photography inspires you most?
Paige: It all comes down to storytelling for me. I feel like wedding photography is the start of a families history, and I am so grateful to be able to tell their story that will be passed down for generations to come.
Heirloom: How do you balance work and play?
Paige: I have a hard time with the balance. I am constantly reworking my business model to find better balance. After having a kid a year and a half ago, it became very important to me. Now, I dedicate Monday, Wednesday and Friday's to being a mom and work during naptime, and Tuesdays and Thursdays buckle down while the babysitters are here. It's currently naptime and I hope to finish this before he wakes up ready to play!
Heirloom: What advice would you share with someone who wanted to start their own photography business?
Paige: I encourage everyone wanting to start a photography business to take a business class (don't learn the hard way like me!), and to reach out to local photographers for mentoring. I strongly believe in the power of community.
